Studley grew a great deal in the twentieth century, so most of the roofs we see here are on postwar and modern housing: concrete tiles on trussed rafters that have reached, or are reaching, the end of their life at the same time as the neighbours' roofs. The signs are the usual ones: porous tiles, perished felt, a loft that smells damp, moss holding water on the north slope.

A re-cover with a breathable membrane, new battens and a dry ridge is the right answer when the tiles and felt are both done; a repair is the right answer when they are not, and we say which at the survey.

The older cottages and the village core, and the villages around it such as Mappleborough Green, Sambourne and Coughton, have clay tile and occasionally slate on older timbers, where the work is more careful and the honest quote allows for what is found once the covering is off. Fascias, soffits and guttering are the single most common roofing job we do in Studley, because on the estates they are usually the first thing to fail and the scaffold cost is low.
