Most of the driveway work in Alcester is on the twentieth-century housing around the town: Kinwarton, the estates off the Birmingham and Stratford roads, and the newer developments, where the original tarmac or concrete has sunk at the edges or cracked across the middle. That is a dig-out, a compacted sub-base at the right depth, drainage designed so the water stays on the plot, and a surface chosen on the day.

Tarmac is popular here for larger and shared drives; resin bound for a frontage on show; block paving on the more traditional houses.

In and around the conservation area the frontages are smaller and older, and Stratford-on-Avon District Council can take a view on the removal of a wall or railings to create a hardstanding, so we check the address first. A dropped kerb goes through Warwickshire County Council as the highway authority and is not always granted on the older streets.
