Parts of Worcester sit close to the Severn, the Teme and their tributaries, and the ground near them holds water and floods. On a driveway that changes the design: a permeable surface is not enough on its own if the base underneath cannot drain, so the sub-base build-up, the fall and where the water is discharged are worked out at the survey and itemised.

Away from the rivers, on the higher ground at Warndon, Battenhall and the newer estates, the job is conventional and the drainage is simpler, but we still look before we quote rather than carrying a standard specification from one plot to the next.

In the conservation areas around the older city, removing a front wall or railings to make a hardstanding can need consent from Worcester City Council, and a dropped kerb is an application to Worcestershire County Council as the highway authority that is not always granted on the older streets. Resin bound is the most requested finish for a frontage on show; block paving suits the Victorian and Georgian houses; tarmac is the economical choice for a larger area.
